RAS AL KHAIMAH

One of the seven states comprising the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Ras Al Khaimah (RAK) or “Head of the Tent” has a fabled history dating as far back as 5000 BC.

Ras Al Khaimah’s story is linked intrinsically to the sea. The Emirate was a major port on the Gulf serving the whole of the Oman Peninsular in days gone by, and a proud seafaring heritage courses through the fabric of the surroundings.

The northernmost portion of the UAE, RAK lies nestled at the foot of the majestic Al Hajjar Mountains, in the midst of some of the most scenic and fertile land in the country. The Emirate’s close proximity to the north of Dubai is an added boost to its business ambitions.

Customs and tradition still hold sway in this corner of the world, with RAK’s residents rightly proud of the great legacy they’ve been born into. This pride coexists quite peacefully with the adoption of various customs and traditions brought into the country by expatriates from all over the world.

Another endearing characteristic about Ras Al Khaimah’s people is their warmth and generosity toward guests. A distinct touch of Arabic hospitality makes its presence felt at unexpected occasions.

Culturally, the Emirate is a stunning treasure-trove of sights and experiences. Traditional sports like falconry and camel racing continue to hold pride of place in the sporting calendar. When it comes to popular arts, folklore and folk dance reflecting the social, ethical and aesthetic values of the community are in abundance. Prominent amongst these is Al Wahabiyyah, a folkdance exclusive to RAK.

Ras Al Khaimah today is an exciting mixture of the ancient and the modern. Having made great advances in the fields of education and health and in the development of its economy and infrastructure, the Emirate is focused on the future with the establishment of Free Trade and Industrial Zones, together with expansive Residential and Tourism developments.
