Majlis: Preserving and Promoting Ras Al Khaimah’s Cultural Heritage
Interested in the UAE's history, urban planning, or national identity? This forum will discuss how Ras Al Khaimah's urban spaces reflect its heritage and offer insight into its ongoing development.
Matthew MacLean’s research focuses on the historical development of Ras Al Khaimah and U.A.E. infrastructure in the second half of the twentieth century as well as the role of spatial transformation in shaping national identity. Ras Al Khaimah’s urban infrastructure is unique in that it integrates a variety of natural environments and architectural types within a comparatively small space, representing local identities and creating the impression of a seamless transition between traditional and modern lifestyles. The survival of traditional and early modern (i.e., 1950s-1970s) buildings and other structures creates opportunities to gain cultural and historical insight into Ras Al Khaimah and the United Arab Emirates.
Presenter: Matthew MacLean is a PhD candidate in the joint program in history and Middle Eastern and Islamic studies at New York University (NYU). His dissertation research is on the spatial transformation of the Trucial States and United Arab Emirates in the second half of the twentieth century, with a focus on Ras Al Khaimah.
